At the Omaha beach landing in 1945, the Germans had killed over 3,000 invading Americans by 10am.
The rest survivors on that beach took shelter under a small ridge.
All the commanding officers have been killed. So no one to command them. There was a German machine gun right above them so they couldn't just move.
The American military command sent an officer to the beach to help resolve the situation.
When the officer got there. He called on his fellow soldiers for a volunteer to charge the German machine gun. Only one man had the courage.
The young soldier ran up to the machine gun screaming and shooting and the gunners. He lost in the exchange and was gunned down. His stomach was ripped apart and his intestines were spilled all over the place.
The officer then said "Gentlemen, they are killing us all at the beach , let us all charge and get killed inland."
So they all charged the machine gun the same time, some got killed, but they over ran the position.
You see, the first guy was a rebel, the rest? Faithful soldiers.
Rebels don't always succeed, but when they do, they rule the world. Funny enough, sometimes the risk of staying vs charging might be the same. The risk of charging first vs charging later might end up the same.
But the reward is rarely the same. If the first soldier had succeed, he would have earned a medal.
One 22 year old soldier screamed, took his gun and run up the machine gun shooting.
He didn't get the better part of the exchange so he was shot dead.
