Balance: Never forget to breathe

Today, I saw my Uber driver checking the map, stepping on the gas, turning the steering and looking around the road while telling me a funny story about his little daughter.

He is able to multi-task through all these because of balance attained through practice. Everything in nature works in harmony by first attaining balance. Through practice, the tightrope walker learns to walk comfortably on the slimmest of ropes and makes a dance out of it. That balance did not fall out of the sky, there was the practice then the perfection.

I was a fighter in my previous career, one of my biggest challenges at some point was running out of breath mid-fight. And my coach would always tell me “Dave, whatever you do, never forget to breathe”. He thought me to always remember to breathe before and after every move. The more I perfected that formula, the more I lasted through fights. My singing coach taught me something similar.

In all you do, never forget to breathe. It’s a balance that can be attained through practice.

People say multi-tasking isn’t possible, but that’s because the multi-tasker isn’t practicing to do it well they are just groping through everything at the same time mindlessly.

Multi-tasking works if done well. You can be working on that job and still be taking that course. You can be occupying that role while learning about the next. You can be running your family and still be growing your career.

You can build a beautiful relationship while building your dream. It may take a little practice for your body to start subconsciously remember to call when you should, text when you should, study when you should, work and play when you should. Balance is the key but with practice comes the power to unlock that key.
