The ghost battalion

An old man who fought in the Biafran war once told me a story he was part of. He is now late though.

In 1970, 15 days after Ojukwu fled the war in his private jet, the rest of his top-ranking officers surrendered to the federal troops.

There was big jubilation among the federal troops, but some of them started burning, looting, and raping women in the occupied Biafran territories. They would drag random young men into the town football field and execute them by firing squad on accusations of being ex-Biafran soldiers.

By day 3, the carnage had become too much, one of the old and wounded Biafran warlords said ‘enough is enough’. He secretly assembled a number of the remaining young men, quickly put them through basic combat training, and got them to lay an ambush for the marauders among the next day.

They stationed 3 machine guns along the tree lines.

The next day when the looting, shootings, and sexual molestations started, the Biafran recruits opened fire from the tree lines, it took less than 5 minutes and they wiped out the entire battalion including their commander.

The shooters quickly buried the bodies, wiped out all evidence, and disappeared into the bushes. Till today, that battalion is unaccounted for and ‘nobody’ knows what happened to them, the ghost battalion.

Be careful fighting wars that have already been won.
