There are two types of survival skills: essential and non-essential.

For instance, in the olden days hunting and farming were essential skills.
If you had any of those two, nomatter the condition of the economy in the land, you will always be able to find something to eat.

Trading, textile making, singing, dancing, being able to play drums, digging, construction etc weren't really essential.

If the economy goes bad, people with those skills starve.

Today, an essential skill in life is web development. It doesn't matter what you studied in school, what other skills you have, where you are and the economy of the jungle, if you know how to design websites, you will always be able to find jobs and always be able to feed.
